Now

This is a now page. Inspired by Derek Sivers. I’ll update this every few weeks.

What I’m doing

I’m currently in Montana for a few weeks visiting family and helping out with chores and maintenance around their mountain cabin property on Lemhi Pass at the crest of the Continental Divide. This includes fence mending and cutting up downfall for firewood. It’s a beautiful time of year here with wildflowers and wild weather.

Right now I’m:

  • Writing here at The Crooked Trail. I’m aiming to publish something worth reading at least once a week
  • Focusing on my health. Working out every day, getting good sleep, preparing healthy meals for us. I’ve taken on all the cooking and shopping duties, which has been its own learning curve
  • Getting out for local adventures as much as possible — camping, hiking, skiing, mountain biking
  • Learning/Improving my Spanish
  • Nurturing relationships with friends and family
  • Dreaming and planning for the next trip

What I’m reading

I often have two books going at once. One fiction and one non-fiction. Here’s what I’m reading now.

  • Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson, the 3rd book in the Stormlight Archive series
  • How to Live: Or A Life of Montaigne by Sarah Bakewell – A biography of Michele de Montaigne, inventor of the personal essay

What I’m thinking about

  • The opposition between the desire to wander and travel and the pull to root to a place. How to reconcile these. Is it possible to have some of both?
  • How to contribute meaningfully without filling my days with tasks just to feel busy.
