Now

This is a now page. Inspired by Derek Sivers. I’ll update this every few weeks.

What I’m doing

Spring is in full swing here in the Pacific Northwest so I’m spending a lot of time outside.

Earlier this year I left a twenty year career in tech for a sabbatical of indeterminate length. I’m working on figuring out what comes next, which is turning out to be both more challenging and more exciting than I expected.

Jocelyn, our cat Asha, and I spent the first two months of the year driving our truck camper through the desert Southwest and Baja California. We’re home now, which feels strange in the good way that home always feels after a long trip.

Right now I’m:

  • Volunteering with local organizations working on habitat restoration, forest defense, and food sovereignty. These include Bark, Oregon Natural Desert Association, and Rhythm Seed Farm.
  • Writing here at The Crooked Trail. I’m aiming to publish something worth reading at least once a week
  • Focusing on my health. Working out every day, getting good sleep, preparing healthy meals for us. I’ve taken on all the cooking and shopping duties, which has been its own learning curve
  • Spending time in the garden and working on the house.
  • Getting out for local adventures as much as possible — camping, hiking, skiing, mountain biking
  • Learning/Improving my Spanish
  • Nurturing relationships with friends and family
  • Dreaming and planning for the next trip

What I’m reading

I often have two books going at once. One fiction and one non-fiction. Here’s what I’m reading now.

  • Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson, the 3rd book in the Stormlight Archive series
  • World as Lover, World as Self by Joanna Macy

What I’m thinking about

  • The opposition between the desire to wander and travel and the pull to root to a place. How to reconcile these. Is it possible to have some of both?
  • How to contribute meaningfully without filling my days with tasks just to feel busy.
