Now

This is a now page. Inspired by Derek Sivers. I’ll update this every few weeks.

What I’m doing

I’m back in Oregon after a 5 week trip through Washington and Montana. I rode the Northern half of the Washington Backcountry Discovery route on motorcycles with an old friend. We visited family, hiked and camped in Glacier National Park with a friend from Portland, and went to two music festivals. I’m back home for a few weeks catching up on some house projects, yard maintenance, etc. before we head out again at the end of the month for another trip to Colorado and New Mexico.

Right now I’m:

  • Writing here at The Crooked Trail. I’m aiming to publish something worth reading regularly
  • Focusing on my health. Working out every day, getting good sleep, preparing healthy meals for us. I’ve taken on all the cooking and shopping duties, which has been its own learning curve
  • Getting out for local adventures as much as possible — camping, hiking, skiing, mountain biking
  • Learning/Improving my Spanish
  • Nurturing relationships with friends and family
  • Dreaming and planning for the next trip
  • Working on beaver habitat restoration and forest defense with Bark and the Cascade Forest Conservancy

What I’m reading

I often have two books going at once. One fiction and one non-fiction. Here’s what I’m reading now.

  • Apocalyptic Planet by Craig Childs
  • A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers

What I’m thinking about

  • The opposition between the desire to wander and travel and the pull to root to a place. How to reconcile these. Is it possible to have some of both?
  • How to contribute meaningfully without filling my days with tasks just to feel busy.
